One of the most important benefits of winning your asylum case is the ability to become a legal permanent resident (green card holder). One year after your case is approved you are eligible to apply for legal permanent residency. If your spouse and children were included on your asylum application, they can apply for a green card as well.
Of course, none of these benefits are possible if your case does not go smoothly. Give yourself professional backing by hiring the Bel Air immigration attorneys of Portner & Shure, P.A. We know the specifics of filing for a green card as an asylee and can help you with this process from start to finish.

What Does It Mean to Be an Asylee?
If you are an asylee, you are eligible to apply for legal permanent residency status (a green card) if you meet the following requirements:
- You have been physically present in the U.S. for one year from the date you were admitted as a refugee;
- You are admissible to the U.S.;
- Your asylee status has not been terminated;
- You continue to meet the definition of an asylee;
- You have returned to the country from which you sought asylee status; and
- You have not firmly resettled in another country.
If you are approved for legal permanent residency, the date on your green card will be backdated to one year before your green card was approved. For example, if you are approved for legal permanent residency on July 1, 2020, the date of your residency will actually be dated July 1, 2019.
