Did You Suffer an Injury After Using Wegovy?
Wegovy® is a popular weight loss medication that is usually prescribed for people who are at risk of serious health conditions due to obesity. Although, the injectable medication has also been used for non-medical weight loss needs and off-label use. Recently, more and more reports of serious and unreported side effects have reached the headlines, which has led to a wave of Wegovy lawsuits.
Did you use Wegovy and suffer unexpected side effects? You might be eligible to file a claim or lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of this injectable weight loss drug. What is Wegovy?
Technically, Wevogy is a GLP-1 receptor and semaglutide drug, which is a type of drug used to manage diabetes symptoms and reduce the risk of health problems related to obesity. Semaglutide drugs work by regulating insulin release, which is important for diabetics, as well as mimicking hormones that make someone feel full after eating. By “convincing” the user that they are full, Wegovy can curb a user’s appetite, so they start to eat less and naturally lose weight by reducing daily caloric intake.
Wegovy is administered once a week as a 0.25 mg injectable dose. After four weeks at this dosage level, it will be increased based on the doctor’s evaluation of the patient’s health and weight loss.
Why is Novo Nordisk Being Sued for Wegovy?
Every pharmaceutical drug comes with a risk of certain side effects. It becomes a legal issue when the manufacturer of a drug fails to take the appropriate steps to minimize those risks and inform the public about them. In late 2023, Novo Nordisk became the target of investigations and criticism as many Wegovy users began to complain about serious gastrointestinal complications, including gastroparesis, a potentially life-threatening paralysis of the stomach and intestines. Novo Nordisk never included gastrointestinal complications in its list of known Wegovy side effects, even though such side effects appear to be so common that the drugmaker reasonably should have known about them.
In the Wegovy lawsuits forming against Novo Nordisk, the company is being accused of:
- Failing to warn patients and medical professionals of the gastrointestinal risks caused by Wegovy.
- Intentionally using misleading marketing to downplay the severity of Wegovy side effects.
What to Do If You Used Wegovy
If you currently use prescription Wegovy, you should not stop using it without first talking to your primary care provider or physician. Ask them about the safe way to stop using Wegovy based on your health needs. You might be recommended an alternative medicine or treatment for diabetes or weight loss.
Once you talk to your doctor about switching from Wegovy, you should:
- Call (410) 995-1515: Let our Wegovy lawsuit attorneys from Portner & Shure, P.A. know about your Wegovy use and the serious health consequences caused by it. Remember that we help clients in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
- Request medical records: A copy of your medical records could be crucial for establishing that your injuries or symptoms were caused by Wegovy use. If you have any questions about how to get a copy of your medical records, let our lawyers know. We can help you through this process, so we can more quickly get to work on your case.
What Compensation is Available?
The compensation available to you as someone who was injured by Wegovy will depend on your injuries and losses. In many cases, Wegovy lawsuit plaintiffs can demand compensation that helps pay for economic damage like medical treatment costs and any wages they lost while recovering. Non-economic damage could also apply to your case, which includes losses like pain, suffering, shortened life expectancy, and more.
Our Wegovy lawyers know how to pursue a maximized amount of compensation for each client we represent. We are prepared to attempt settlement negotiations that can get you compensation sooner rather than later, but we are also equipped to take your lawsuit to trial if necessary. Our goal is to do whatever it takes to get you a fair recovery.
