How Do PFAS Chemicals Get in Drinking Water Sources?

Called “forever chemicals” because they take an incalculably high amount of years to break down and bio-disintegrate, PFAS chemicals have the potential to seep into groundwater sources when improperly disposed. PFAS chemicals are used to manufacture many different products like nonstick cookware and Teflon-brand pans, and during the manufacturing process, microscopic PFAS contaminants can get washed down drains and gutters. As time goes on, the traces of PFAS chemicals begin to accumulate to the point that groundwater sources can become contaminated, which in turn exposes people who get drinking water from the same source.

However, PFAS chemical exposure is believed to be possible through many other forms, not just drinking water source contamination. For example, firefighters who use certain extinguishing foams may be directly exposed to PFAS chemicals within the foam.

How is PFAS Harmful to Humans?

Repeated or high exposure to PFAS chemicals has been linked to:

  • Kidney cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Liver failure
  • Thyroid damage
  • Autoimmune system deficiencies
  • Infertility
  • Obesity and increased cholesterol levels
  • Many other serious health conditions

What to Do If You Were Exposed to PFAS

If you think you have been exposed to PFAS, you should:

  1. Speak to your medical provider about your suspected exposure and arrange a medical checkup, especially if you have already been diagnosed with cancer, liver or thyroid issues, and other health problems linked to PFAS exposure.
  2. Keep any medical information or other documentation you have that may show how or when you were exposed to PFAS.
  3. Talk to our PFAS lawsuit attorneys from Portner & Shure, P.A. to discuss your legal options.

Compensation in PFAS Exposure Lawsuits

Big-name companies like DuPont have already been hit with lawsuits for their poor handling and disposal of PFAS chemicals that have contaminated water systems nationwide. In South Carolina, legal action ended with massive settlements totaling more than $11 billion paid by several companies to the water systems that sued them. Past results cannot guarantee future results, but legal commentators are expecting mass torts and class actions to form in historic numbers as more and more affected parties demand compensation from the corporations that negligently exposed them to dangerous PFAS chemicals, oftentimes for many years.

If you can file a PFAS exposure lawsuit, whether it is part of a mass tort or not, we may be able to pursue compensation that pays for:

  • Economic losses like past and future medical bills and lost wages
  • Non-economic losses like pain, suffering, and shortened life expectancy
